Redemption

The word means to buy back or ransom in full. It also means the right to buy. It can imply deliverance and salvation. No doubt it is a positive term. In the work of God’s salvation, redemption is a major part.

Freedom

The word is used in the Old Testament for the freeing of one who was sold. The slave could be redeemed. If a Jew sold himself to the service of another one of his kin could redeem him. This service agreement established by God was for the social governing of Israel and also pointed to the day in which God would become a kinsman to man by becoming flesh and laying down his life for the redemption of mankind. This we can now see from the New Testament side of things.

In the New Testament the word is closely connected with Jesus Christ. There is no eternal redemption without His sacrifice for sins. In the Old Testament their animal sacrifices were a temporary provision. Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

In the Old Testament the one who manifested his faith by his works had his sins remitted but not redeemed. The redemptive act of Jesus Christ was not yet made. When Christ died and rose again he led captivity captive and then they were redeemed.

Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed. The devil no longer has any claim on those who have been redeemed. “Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?”

God’s Blood is the payment price

1 Pet 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1 Pet 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

When Jesus Christ showed up on earth he was pointed out to be the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. Jesus stated, “This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.”

Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 Tim 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Identifying the Redeemer

Israel had a Redeemer it was the LORD. He by his prophet He led them out of Egypt. He redeemed them from the hand of their enemy.

Psa 78:35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

Isa 47:4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

Job knew that his redeemer lived and that he would see Him one day even though worms ate his body. Job 19:25-27

Do you have the same Redeemer Job believed in and Israel had? Today we acknowledge God manifest in the flesh as Jesus Christ? He is the one to whom they will sing, “thou are worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;”

He has been preached to this sinful world. He has been believed on by some of this world. He was received up into glory. He is man’s only hope of redemption from sin.

Obtaining Redemption

Man in his sinful state is in need of redemption. He cannot redeem himself. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ who died and rose again for your sins and you will be saved, justified, redeemed, sanctified and one day glorified. This is only a partial list of the benefits of being born-again.
